Elaine E. Schmikla

Elaine (Halderson) Schmikla, age 94, of Madison, formerly of LaCrosse, passed away peacefully October 1, 2024. She was born March 30, 1930 to Arthur and Josephine Halderson.

Elaine graduated from LaCrosse Central High School. She married Charles Schmikla on November 4, 1950 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in LaCrosse. They lived in LaCrosse until 1962 when they moved to Madison and became members of St. Maria Goretti Parish.

Elaine enjoyed playing bridge, sewing, and shopping. She was a huge Wisconsin Badgers fan and had season tickets for football, basketball and hockey for over 50 years. Elaine loved visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always made sure to have special treats for them.

Elaine is survived by Charles, her husband of 73 years, and her children Steve(Debbie) Schmikla, Mary(Ken) Ploessl, and Barb(Jack) Knott. She is also survived by six grandchildren; Stephanie(Zach) Schreiner, Brian(Brooke) Ploessl, Christopher (Marcela) Ploessl, Kirstin(Rob) Tarlock, Krystle(Daniel) Clark, and Kendra(Alex) Reineke. Her nine great-grandchildren include Adeline and Eric Schreiner, Eva and Lucy Ploessl, Henry Ploessl, Maya Tarlock, Henry and Charlotte Clark, and Hudson Reineke.

A heartfelt thanks to the wonderful caregivers at Bay Harbor Assisted Living and Brighton Hospice. We appreciate the compassion you showed Elaine.
