Madison - Elinor Constance (Martin) Moore, age 90, passed away suddenly on July 10th, 2014 in her home in Madison. She was born March 25, 1924 to the late Burney and Helen Martin in Newark, NJ. She attended Mt Holyoke College, graduating with a B.A. in Mathematics in 1945, and Yale University, graduating with a M.A. in Mathematics in 1946. After college, she taught high school mathematics for several years at St Mary's Episcopal School for Indian Girls in Springfield, SD. She then attended Brown University where she met her future husband. She married the late Edward Forrest Moore on July 29, 1950 in Union, NJ, and they subsequently had three daughters: Nancy, Shirley, and Martha. They lived in Chatham, NJ, from 1953-1966. They lived in a home on the west side of Madison from 1966 until Edward died in 2003 and Elinor moved to an apartment at Oakwood Village University Woods in late 2005.
Elinor and her family have long been active members of the First Baptist Church in Madison. She sang in the church choir for many years and loved music. She learned to play the piano as an adult while living in New Jersey. She had a collection of seashells, and enjoyed growing orchids and other flowering houseplants. She and her husband were active in the civil rights movement in the 1960's. Elinor was active in supporting Habitat for Humanity, Heifer Project, and a variety of charitable causes. She is remembered as a very loving, caring, active, and intelligent person. She really enjoyed being a mother and felt that it was her vocation in life. She was very involved with her grandsons, having them spend a couple weeks without their parents in Wisconsin each summer and sharing various fun activities and trips with them. She was thrilled to become a great grandmother two years ago. While at Oakwood, Elinor has been involved in the tone chimes, volunteering at the village store, and as a greeter for new residents. We celebrated Elinor's 90th birthday with a big party in March of this year.
Elinor was preceded in death by two younger brothers, Laurence A Martin and Stanton Martin. She is survived by three daughters, Nancy Moore of Madison, WI, Shirley (Brian) Bild of St Louis, MO, and Martha 'Marty' (Mike) Mallett of High Ridge, MO; three grandsons, Andrew (Elizabeth) Ray of Bentonville, AR, Jonathan Ray of Venice, CA, Aaron Mallett of High Ridge, MO, two step-granddaughters Amy and Erin Bild, one great granddaughter Abigail Ray, and many nieces and nephews.
