Elizabeth “Betty” Jane Blumer, age 88, passed away on October 20, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born to John and Catherine (Schroeder) Maly on October 4, 1936 in Middleton, the second youngest of 6 children. She attended school and graduated from Middleton High School, then went on to work at the Middleton Co-Op before working in the accounting departments of Sears in Green Bay and Madison’s west side.
In 1957, she met Ralph Blumer at a Turner Hall dance and the two were married on August 21, 1958. The couple eventually moved to De Pere and raised their children there. They moved back to Madison after Ralph’s retirement to be closer to their children and grandchildren and extended family.
Betty’s life was spent helping others. She proudly worked with many organizations such as the Ladies of the Knights of Columbus, the VFW Auxiliary in Green Bay, the Red Hat Society, and the Carefree Ladies. She also volunteered at St. Mary’s Hospital and St. Luke’s, serving meals to the homeless there. She was also very proud of the work she did for her church community, St. Maria Goretti. There, she sang in the choir, helped distribute communion, and helped with charity work.
In her free time, Betty enjoyed reading, gardening, spending time with her sisters, traveling, seeing shows at the Overture Center, going to the casino with her friends, euchre, and bowling. She cheered loudly at Packer games with Ralph and family. But most of all, what she loved to do was see her grandchildren and all their activities, whether it be soccer, baseball, music, or cheerleading.
Betty is survived by her children, Nancy (Tim) Heindl, Kevin Blumer, Roger (Susan) Blumer, and Daryl Blumer; her grandchildren, Dan, James, Megan, Derek, Amber, Katy, Madison (Nick Starliper), and Alex. She is further survived by her sisters, Charlotte Schneider and Donna Cushman.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents, John and Catherine (Schroeder) Maly; her husband, Ralph Blumer; her son Duane; her sisters and their husbands, Marion (Joe) Ballweg and Joan (Ray) Pulda; her brother and his wife Harold (Carol) Maly; and her brothers-in-law Elden Cushman and Leo Schneider.
A memorial mass will take place on Saturday, October 26 at 11am at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church 5313 Flad Ave, Madison, WI 53711. A visitation will be held from 10am until the time of service. Betty will be laid to rest at Resurrection Cemetery.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the compassionate staff at Agrace Hospice for their exceptional care during Betty’s final days. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Agrace Hospice.
