Elizabeth (Betty) Rhodes Schurman, 92, passed away on December 4th 2022 at St Mary’s Care Center- memory care unit in Madison Wisconsin from natural causes and peacefully in her sleep. Betty was born in Madison on September 8th, 1930 to Walter C. and Eleanor (Hepper) Rhodes.
After attending Randall School, she graduated from Madison West High School in 1948. Betty attended St Luke’s College of Radiographic Technology in Evanston, Illinois where she received her degree as an X-ray Technician. She worked for a time in Evanston and while living in Evanston she met Richard C. Schurman. They were married in 1953 in Madison and in the next year moved to Madison where they raised their family. Betty stayed home to raise her children for many years and then worked part-time in a variety of offices and businesses.
Betty is survived by her two sons: Rick (Dyann) Wausau, WI, and Tom (Laurie) Fond du lac, WI; a daughter Susan (Rick) Jacobson, Janesville, WI; daughter-in-law Ingrid Schurman, eight wonderful grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard, son John, her parents, and two sisters and one brother.
In the 60's, Betty's sister introduced her to the need to make Jesus her Lord and Savior and with other family members began attending Middleton Baptist Church. This is where she grew in her faith and where she supported her children in their faith journeys.
Betty was a lifelong sports fan, especially the Badgers and the Packers and brought up her children to include the games when planning their family holidays together.
Betty was a beloved wife, daughter, sister, mom, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her family is her legacy and her love for the Lord permeates the lives of her family members left behind. She often spoke of heaven and her faith to those who would listen.
A memorial celebration will be on January 7th at Cress Funeral home, 3610 Speedway Rd in Madison, with visitation at 1 pm and the ceremony at 2 pm with a light refreshment to follow. Pastor Jason Eddy (grandson-in- law) from Janesville will be officiating the service and Pastor Micheal Simmerman (grandson- in law) officiating a private family burial service.
