Elsie Glass

Elsie Rubenstein Glass, 91, of Madison, Wisconsin passed away on Friday, October 21, 2011.
Born July 8, 1920 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Barney and Rebecca Silver, Elsie was the eldest of four children. A graduate of Mechanic Arts High School in 1936, she worked for the Ideal Leather Company before marrying Harry Rubenstein in March, 1946 and moving to Virginia, Minnesota. In addition to raising her family and being an active member of the B'nai Abraham Synagogue and its Sisterhood Chapter, she enrolled in Mesabi State Community College at the age of 45 where she earned her degree in business as a member of Phi Theta Kappa honorary fraternity.
Upon Harry's passing, Elsie married Lou Glass in April, 1975 and moved to Madison, Wisconsin where she joined Temple Beth El. In recognition of her service as treasurer of the Rachel Jastrow Chapter of Hadassah for more than 20 years, Elsie was acknowledged with the Love-Of-A-Lifetime Award in May, 2009. For many years, Elsie taught English as a Second Language and received a letter of commendation from former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson. As a survivor of breast cancer in 2000 and 2008, Elsie provided comfort and solace to those in need as a volunteer at CareWear in the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics who presented her with the Volunteer Ambassador Award in May, 2006. Elsie was still driving to work at Moffit and Fayram Ltd Accounting until she took ill this past May.
In addition to her family and friends, Elsie's passions included golf, travel, mah jongg, homemade cheesecake and her bead-a-point artistry. She was acknowledged by the Wisconsin State Journal as a "Madisonian You Should Know" in January, 2005.
Survivors include: her sons David Rubenstein of Madison, Wisconsin and Lee (Marlene) Rubenstein of Glencoe, Illinois; her grandchildren Brandon (Jennifer) Rubenstein, Trevor Rubenstein, Zachary Rubenstein, Jared Rubenstein and Dena Rubenstein; her great granddaughter Brooke Rubenstein; her brother Allen Silver; her nephews, nieces and cousins; and her many friends.
On Monday, October 24, 2011 a memorial service will be held at 12:30 pm at Temple Beth El, 2702 Arbor Drive, Madison, Wisconsin (608-238-3123). On Tuesday, October 25, 2011 a graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 am at the Range Hebrew Cemetery in Virginia, Minnesota. On Wednesday, October 26th and Thursday, October 27th Shiva will be observed from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm at the home of Lee and Marlene Rubenstein, 931 Forest Avenue, Glencoe, Illinois. On Saturday, October 29th Shiva will be observed from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm at 4314 Waite Circle, Madison, Wisconsin.
Funeral arrangements are through Cress Funeral Service, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison, Wisconsin (608-238-3434) with assistance by Bauman-Cron Funeral Home, 516 South 1st Street, Virginia, Minnesota (218-741-9593).
