Madison - After a long and well-lived life, Esther Thatcher gently left her tired body behind on February 7, 2012, in the presence of her children, Wayne and Phyllis.
Esther, the third child of Anna and Bill Behling, was born at home in the Town of Alpasso, almost 93 years ago. She was a graduate of Menomonie High School, where she met her husband of 60 years, Phil, who died in 1997. They spent many wonderful years in a cabin they built on 80 acres of woodland in the Baraboo Bluffs watching wildlife and relaxing in front of the Franklin stove, where her ability to get a good fire going was a source of pride.
During the war years, she worked long hours at the Ray-O-Vac Company in Madison. Retiring from a clerical job at Madison East High School, she had more time for bird watching, playing the organ and reading. She was a wonderful flower gardener and card player, earning her nickname, Clutch. She was a loving wife and mother, a caring neighbor, and always cheered for the underdog. We treasure the memories she left us and will miss her beyond words.
In addition to her children, she is survived by her sister, Louise Styer; son-in-law, Marty Micke; grandchildren, Laura and Steve Thatcher, Patrick (Bobie) and Russell Micke; great grandchildren, Toni, Carmen, Dylan, Anna and Tommy; and great great grandchildren, Braden and Logan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Edna Schroeder, brother, Bob Behling, daughter-in-law, Fran Thatcher and a granddaughter, Sharon Thatcher.
A memorial service will be held at the Cress Funeral Home, 3325 E. Washington Ave. Madison WI on Friday, February 17, 2012 at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to St. John's Lutheran Church, a favorite charity or act of kindness in Esther's memory would be appreciated.
