Eugene "Gene" Gilbert

Eugene “Gene” Rex Gilbert, age 82, of Madison, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, January 2, 2025; reunited with his wife, Barbara, in eternal life. 

He was born on August 20, 1942 in Madison, the son of Edward and Sadie (Lake) Gilbert. He graduated from Madison East High School in 1960. After high school, he worked for AJ Sweets Company, and later for the State of Wisconsin until he retired. 

Gene married Barb on August 20, 1993. Together they loved going on cruises and made a special trip to Hawaii. Recently he made a couple trips to Myrtle Beach, SC where he spent quality time with family. Gene also loved to do woodworking projects. He also took great pride in being a ‘Grandpa’.

Gene will be mostly remembered for his warm, kind, compassionate and fun-loving personality. He has a wonderful community where he lives and has received so much support and kindness from so many of his friends. He will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his son, Bob (Tammy) Alme; grandchildren Kyle (Ashley) Alme and Carlie (Mike) Mineau; great-grand children, Kaysen, Korbyn and Callan; his sister Beverly (Pat) Boyson; his brother Jerry (Sandy) Gilbert; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara, parents Edward and Sadie Gilbert, his twin brother Ed Gilbert, sister Donna Horsfall, and his first wife Betty Gilbert.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, January 9, 2025 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 5101 Schofield St, Monona, with Fr. Chad Droessler presiding. Visitation will be from 9:00 A.M. until the time of services at church on Thursday. Gene will be laid to rest at Resurrection Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to a luncheon immediately following the burial, in the church fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.
