Cottage Grove, Wisconsin – Eugene L. George passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 22nd at Hyland Crossing Memory Care in Sun Prairie. He was 77 years old.
Eugene was born July 3rd, 1943 to Keith and Edith George in Lancaster, WI. He was united in marriage to Judith L. Kirsch on August 5th, 1967 in Gillett, WI. Together, they were married 53 years and gave birth to two children, Lisa and Chris. In his younger years, Gene enjoyed hunting with his brothers and his friends. In 1962 he enlisted in the United States Army and spent time in Colorado, Texas and France; he especially enjoyed his time in France and talked about it often, even shipping a car he had bought there back to the United States. Once his time in the service was complete, he was a proud Owner-Operator and Semi Driver for many years. In May of 2018, Gene was fortunate to fly to Washington D.C. on one of many Badger Honor Flights, accompanied by his son, Chris. He was an active member of the American Legion Post #248, in Cottage Grove for many years. Gene always enjoyed riding his Harley in the local parades with his bike decked out with a large American Flag, proudly flying behind him. He also participated in the LZ Lambeau Honor Ride, it was no doubt that he loved his motorcycle and his country. On most days, you would not find him without his cowboy boots or large, western style belt buckles. He had a generous collection of both. Many mornings, he spent time enjoying his coffee with his friends at their favorite restaurant.
Gene is survived by his wife, Judith George; children, Lisa (Eric) Brown, and Chris (Jaime) George; grandchildren, Kirsten (Danny) Petrzelka and Stuart Brown; siblings, Vicki (Roger) Goodman, Roger George, Jeff (Angie) George and Quentin George; many nieces and nephews and his grand-dogs & cats, “Toby”, “Mila”, “Piper”, “Sophie”, “Amber”, “Maggie”, “Cecil” and “Gracie”. He was preceded in death by his parents Keith and Edith George; sister, Pennie George; father and mother in-law, Paul and Bernice Kirsch; and brother in law, Leonard Kirsch.
A gathering will be held from 10:00am-11:30am on Tuesday, January 5th, 2021. Following the gathering, a burial will take place at Highland Memory Gardens; 3054 Co Rd. BB, Madison, WI 53718.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Local Alzheimer’s and Dementia Association or to The National Heart Foundation.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Hyland Crossing Memory Care Facility, with a very special “Thank you” to Kim and Kayla. You didn’t let his “grump” stop you from caring for him. Also, “Thank you” to the staff at Meriter Hospital 6th tower in Madison and Agrace Hospice.
“Because someone we love is in heaven, there is now a little bit of heaven in our home.”
