MADISON
Following a long struggle with the devastating effects of dementia, Evelyn Leona (Halverson) Rice, age 93, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 17, 2010, at St. Mary's Care Center in Madison. Dedicated to her family, she was an inspiration to all for her devout faith, love and generosity, and the strength and courage she displayed in battling this life-ending disease. Evelyn was born to Theodore and Sena (Colden) Halverson on Sept. 20, 1916, in Postville (Stewart). She was the eighth child out of nine, having five sisters and three brothers. Evelyn graduated from the Blanchardville High School in 1934. She was confirmed at Adams Lutheran Church in 1932. After high school, Evelyn eventually moved to Madison where she met Fred Rice, son of Elmer and Kathryn Rice. They were united in marriage on Feb. 14, 1942. Evelyn was a stay-at-home mother until 1962, when she went to work as a sales clerk at Gimbels in Hilldale Shopping Center in Madison. Evelyn was a devout Lutheran and kept her children in the faith, making sure each was confirmed. Evelyn was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church until the church moved to the Eastside. She then became a member of Grace Lutheran Church where she has been a devoted member. Evelyn served her church for many years as a volunteer for Lutheran Homes and Services, and Bethesda House of Thrift. Evelyn was also a life member of the Elks Ladies Auxiliary, participating in many charitable events. Evelyn is survived by her sons, Tom (Joan Hopwood) of Oregon, Terry (Jeanie) and Tim (Chris) both of Verona; eight grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; sister, Bernice Hamilton; along with many nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Fred; six siblings; and grandson, Jeffery (Tom). Services for Evelyn will be held Saturday, March 20, 2010, at 10 a.m. at GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH ELS, 1 S. Rosa Road, Madison, WI 53705. A visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 9 a.m. The Rev. Theodore Gullixson will be presiding. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials in Evelyn's name may be gifted to Grace Lutheran Church, 1 S. Rosa Road, Madison. The family wishes to thank all the caring and compassionate staff at St. Mary's Care Center which made Evelyn's last years pleasant and comfortable.
