Fen Huang

September 6, 1939 — March 8, 2014

Fen Huang, aged 74, passed away on Saturday, March 8th, 2014 at UW Hospital after a long illness.

She was born in Jingjiang county, Jinangsu province, China, and grew up in Shanghai. She graduated from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) with a BS in Biophysics. Before coming to America, she was a professor of biochemistry at the Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology.

In the early 1980's, she came to America to work at UW-Madison. She later joined Promega as a senior scientist when the company was in its infancy, and helped to build and grow the company for over 30 years until she fell ill. She took great pride and joy in her work.

She grew to love America, the city of Madison, and Wisconsin. She sponsored her husband and son to the U.S., and eventually became a U.S. citizen. She was a long time resident of the Wingra Creek neighborhood, choosing it for its proximity to water and the UW arboretum. She enjoyed taking walks along the bike path and showing her grandchildren the geese and other wildlife.

She is survived by her devoted husband of nearly 50 years, Ian, loving son Trent, daughter-in-law, and three precious grandchildren.

To honor her wishes, no funeral will take place and her ashes will be scattered around her beloved Lake Wingra. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to a charity of your choice.
