Stoughton- Florence L. Monson, age 89, passed away at Skaalen Home in Stoughton on Friday, June 24, 2011. She was born in Edgerton on December 1, 1921, a daughter of Martin and Karen (Kildahl) Hoel. Florence met Harvey Monson of Stoughton at an Edgerton/ Stoughton high school basketball game, and they married at First Lutheran Church on March 2, 1940, after courting for two years. During the war, Florence was a (Rosie the Riveter) welder on a Liberty Ship in the Richmond, California shipyards. When Harvey was drafted, Florence returned to Stoughton and operated a nursing home with her mother in law. Florence also worked in the laundry, as a waitress, and along with Harvey, worked at and then owned Gamble's Hardware Store. Following Harvey's death in 1980, Florence went on to work at Asleson's hardware for 20 more years, retiring at age 80. Florence was a member of First Lutheran Church, was a member and Past Matron of Eastern Star, and a member of the Sons of Norway. She loved working, visiting with people, living on the farm, and getting together regularly with her siblings. She is survived by a daughter, Mary (Robert) Barnett of Stoughton; 2 sons, Harvey (Becky) Monson, Jr. of Plymouth, WI, and Jerry Monson of Madison; 9 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Betty Scheel, Elsie (Kenneth) Splinter, and Helen (Clifford) Bakken; a brother, Robert (Shirley) Hoel; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey; a daughter, Barbara Stace; 3 brothers, Lloyd, Mayer, and Wesley; a sister, Ruth, and an infant sister. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 11:00 am at First Lutheran Church, 310 E. Washington St., Stoughton, with the Rev. Richard Halom officiating. Burial will follow at Western Koshkonong Lutheran Cemetery. The family will greet friends at the Cress funeral home in Stoughton on Wednesday, June 29th from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. and again at church on Thursday from 10:00am until the time of service. Special thanks to Pastor Halom, the staff at Skaalen Home, especially the staff of Unit 1, and to the many friends who visited Florence.
