Madison - Fred Edward Lengfeld, age 92, died on Saturday, December 5, 2009. Fred was born May 8, 1917 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, the son of Edward and Catherine Heilberger Lengfeld. In 1936, he earned his Eagle Scout award, Bronze, Silver and Gold Palms. He married Ida Jean Carollo in August 1956. They were married for 53 years. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Wisconsin of Madison and did post-graduate work at the institute of Gerontology at the University of Michigan. He served as chair person of Programs on Aging with the University Wisconsin Extension since 1964 and was adjunct professor of the Faye McBeath Institute on Aging and Adult Life. He served in the 106th Cavalry Division, 10th Mountain Division, and 85th Infantry Regiment during WW II. The 85th spearheaded the attack against the German Line of Defense, the GothicRiver. The first to occupy PO Valley and to contribute to the unconditional surrender of the German Army on May 2, 1945. He was involved in the European African Middle Eastern Campaign and the American Campaign. He received 2 Bronze Stars, for meritorious service in combat on the Fifth Army front. He was also a member of: 106th Cavalry - Horse, Mechanize, 23rd. Cavalry --Reconnaissance, 121st Reconnaissance, 338th Infantry, and MATS - Military, Air Transport Service. He has been the recipient of awards of merit and recognition from several professional organizations including the Wisconsin Park and Recreation Association, The Wisconsin Congress on Aging, The Great Lakes Chapter of Fitness Directors in Industry and Business, The Sir Winston Churchill Commemorative, Professional Achievement Award for outstanding and dedicated Service in the Field of Aging. He served on the 1964 - 1968 Olympic Committee for Men's Swimming. He has been a major contributor to more than 22 publications and instructional materials including ""We Were Children Then"", ""In Honor of Aging"" and ""Youth and Aging Volunteer Program. He was devoted to his family, friends and the outdoors. He valued education and had a strong work ethic that was passed on to all who worked and lived with him. He enjoyed spending time on the property which is located in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Above all else, family events were the highlights of his days. He is survived by his wife, Ida Jean of Madison, daughters Pam(Augie Sr.) of Baraboo, Candace (Robert) of Nashotah, sons Jay(Gina) of Cross Plains and Barry of Madison. His grandchildren, Jessica, Ashley and John Buglass; Luke, Erich and Ethan Lengfeld; Teala and Tylur Lengfeld; Augie Jr., Kathryn and Emma Saiz. Kim (Hocking) Lengfeld of Madison mother of Teala and Tylur. Memorial may be made to: Shriner's Hospital, American Cancer Society, AARP Foundation, or Veteran's of Foreign Wars. Service will be held Friday, December 11, 2009 at 10:00 am at Blessed Sacrament Church, 2116 Hollister St., Madison, Wisconsin. Military Burial to following the service at ForestHillCemetery, 1 Speedway Road, Madison Wisconsin.
