SUN PRAIRIE-Frederick "Fred" Loewen, age 87, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at St. Mary's Hospital. His wife was by his side. He was born on Aug. 14, 1927 in Manhattan to Fred and Ella Loewen. Fred served in the Navy in World War II. Fred earned a full scholarship to the elite Cooper Union School of Architecture in New York City, where he received their highest award for architecture. He met the former Lenore Harkins from Rhinelander, WI who was attending Fordham School of Nursing. At that time, Fred was working as an ocean lifeguard. They were married on Apr. 21, 1950, in New York City. They moved to Minneapolis, where Fred continued his education and graduated with a degree in architecture. They had three treasured sons and then moved to Wisconsin in 1959. Fred worked first as a designer, then a project manager and ultimately reached his goal by becoming state architect and director of the Bureau of Architecture for the State of Wisconsin. Fred was a charismatic and creative person who took pride in fixing things and solving problems. He was an accomplished architect, fine artist, cartoonist and mechanic, and Boy Scout Leader. In his retirement, he spent a lot of time sailing and spent thousands of hours creating model ships. Fred hoped that everyone could experience the joy he got from constantly learning something new. He loved to share stories with anyone who would listen and always expressed his love for life and the home he built.
Fred is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lenore; three sons; four grandchildren; sisters, nieces, nephews, and their extended families.
