MADISON - Frederick C. Winding, Jr., age 80, passed away on Wednesday, October 22, 2009 at the Ellen and Peter Johnson HospiceCare Center with his family by his side. He was born on April 2, 1929 in Milwaukee, the son of Frederick C. Winding, Sr. and Ruth M. Winding (nee Davidson). He graduated from Wauwatosa High School and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While growing up, he and his family spent many wonderful years at their summer home on Beaver Lake in Waukesha County.
Following graduation from the UW, he served with the U.S. Air Force, the majority of his tour spent in Germany. Upon completion of his military assignment, he returned to Milwaukee and briefly joined a family business that was founded in 1873, Winding Roofing Company, an industrial roofing contractor. Realizing from the start that this was not going to be a good fit, he sought, with the blessings of his father, who was then president of the roofing company, other opportunities. Such an opportunity came along in the form of an offer to join the then small staff of the University of Wisconsin Foundation where he would spend the next 36 years, in what he described as a labor of love, serving the interests of the university.
Fred and his family spent the last 45 summers in Door County, where they have enjoyed a wide range of wonderful friends who travel to their vacation homes from all parts of the country. During his working years, he would spend the week in Madison and the weekends in Ephraim. After his retirement, Fred and his wife Julie, to whom he was married for 51 years, would spend 2 months every summer there.
Fred is survived by his devoted wife, Julie; son Robert (Jennifer); and daughter, Susan Winding Stoehr and his 6 grandchildren, Sarah, Molly, Henry, Ben, Emma and Maggie. He is further survived by his sister, Margaret Haesler (Peter) and nieces and nephews. Fred was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Jane.
The family would like to express their gratitude at the wonderful care he received from the doctors and nurses at Meriter Hospital and a special thank you to Dr. Carl Weston and the HospiceCare staff for their unwavering compassion and care.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 30, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Cress Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorials be made to the HospiceCare Center, 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI 53711 or the University of Wisconsin Foundation, P.O. Box 8865, Madison, WI 53708-8860 or a charity of your choice.
