Gary Humphrey

1935 — January 1, 2023

Madison

Gary Humphrey, of Madison, Wisconsin passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 2nd, 2023, after a brief illness.

Gary was a warm and caring man, whose kindness and generosity touched all who knew him.

Born on a farm in Wisconsin, Gary grew up with a love of family, animals, and hard work. He married Barbara, his high school sweetheart and lovingly raised five children in their marriage of over 68 years.

As a young man Gary was an outstanding athlete, participating on many teams including gymnastics, basketball, baseball and swimming. As a father he encouraged and provided the same opportunities for all his children.

Gary graduated from UW-LaCrosse with a Bachelor of Science degree and later obtained a Masters degree from UW-Whitewater, all the while working and raising his young family with Barbara.  He went on to teach for the Madison Public School District for almost 40 years.

During his career he coached both men’s gymnastics and volleyball, positively impacting the lives of many young people.  An avid outdoorsman, he loved to fish, hunt and camp with his family. He loved his annual  hunting/fishing trips with his sons and grandsons. Sailing was one of his passions, he enjoyed taking family out on his boat and sailing on the lakes around Madison. Summers were also spent enjoying golfing, swimming, and playing horseshoes with friends and family.

Gary could always be heard singing or whistling a tune. He was an avid reader and was often found in a comfortable chair reading a cowboy western or sea story. He traveled extensively with Barbara in retirement. They made many trips abroad and to visit family members throughout the country.

Gary was a loving husband, father, and friend. He was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His life was lived fully. Always having a positive outlook and seeing the best in others, he made the world a better place for all those he touched.

He is survived by his loving wife Barbara, his five children; Brian (Deb), Jeff (Judy), Lori (Paul), Brad (Lisa), Tina (Ted), 12 Grandchildren, 9 Great Grandchildren, his brother Gene, and many nieces and nephews.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Bernice and Robert, sister Barbara, brother Robert, and grandson David.
