Gene Hiestand

Madison – Gene Louis Hiestand, age 95, passed away on Sunday July 3, 2022 at UW Hospital.  He was born on July 29, 1926 in Madison, Wisc., the son of Elmer and Inez Hiestand.  He married Rose Miano on February 14, 1947 in Madison, Wisc.

Gene was a Navy Veteran.  He was a retiree from the Madison Post Office.  He had previously worked at the Sub-Zero, Oscar Mayer and Brunsell Lumber.  He would tell us stories of how he stacked the bowling pins at the bowling alley when he was a teen and worked cutting squares of ice from Lake Wingra to use in the refrigerators.  He enjoyed building model cars, planes, and ship models.  Fishing was a relaxing pastime for him.

He is survived by his daughter Rose Mary Belk and Her husband Alvin Belk.  He had four grandchildren, Tina Mohn Johnson, Joshua Mitchel Diehm IV, Amy L. Heerey, Heather V. Belk; great grandchildren; and great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Rose who passed in 2011.  She was known as “Rosie the Crossing Guard” for many years.

There will be a private graveside service for family at Sunset Memory Gardens.
