SUN PRAIRIE - George R. Niebur, age 92, passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2016, on what would have been his 68th wedding anniversary at the Sun Prairie Health Care Center. He was born on August 31, 1924, in Madison, WI, the son of Aloysius and Lucille (Callahan) Niebur.
George proudly served in World War II as a member of the 997th field artillery battalion. He had five battle stars, one for each major campaign in the European Theater. After returning from the war, George attended and graduated from UW-Madison. He began a long and successful business career working for FS Services/Growmark. George retired in 1986 as the Vice President of Field Services.
George married Cassie Kurt on September 4, 1948, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Madison, WI. Together they raised two daughters who thought the world of their dad. George enjoyed traveling, playing Euchre, going to the casinos, and most of all, spending time with his family.
He is survived by two daughters, Debbie (Tom) Schaller of Madison, Bev (Kurt) Kniess of Sun Prairie, two grandsons who lost their hero; Zac of Woodbury, MN and Kels (Danielle) of Stoughton, WI. George also had two great grandchildren that he loved visiting with; Rowan and Crew Kniess of Woodbury, MN. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 am Saturday, September 10, 2016, at Cress Funeral Home, 1310 Emerald Terrace, Sun Prairie, WI. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. A luncheon will follow. Burial will take place at Highland Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Badger Honor Flight. The family would like to thank the staff at the Sun Prairie Health Care Center for the care and compassion they provided these last couple of months to both our dad and our family.
