Gerald Arthur Born

Gerald (Gerry) Arthur Born, age 82, lost his valiant battle with cancer on December 12, 2024 surrounded by his loving family in his home as was his wish. He was born October 27, 1942 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Arthur and Doris Born.

Following graduation from Concordia High School in 1960, he continued his education at Concordia Sr. College, UWM receiving a Master’s Degree in Social Work, and Doctoral work at Marquette University in Educational Psychology.

His career led him down a path of advocating for people with disabilities and the aging population. For almost 30 years he worked in the Department of Health and Social Services for the State of Wisconsin. Following that the ARC WI Disability Association and Knapp’s Development Inc.

Gerry was an active volunteer in the community, his children’s schools, church, and several social groups, almost always in a leadership role. Local politics were also part of his life, serving as an Alderman and one year as City Council President for Madison. He was an avid Wisconsin sports fan, loved traveling, and spending time with family and friends, especially at the cabin.

Gerry was preceded in death by his parents, and sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Robert Schumann. He is survived by his wife, Lois, daughters Wendy (William) Strobel, Michelle (Justin) Saunders, grandchildren Lily Saunders, Zachary Strobel, Ella Saunders, Jacob Strobel and Hannah Strobel, niece, Lynn Schumann and nephew Jeffrey Schumann (Lori).

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2025 from 1:00-4:00 PM at Cress Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Road Madison, WI 53705 for family and friends.

The family extends their deepest appreciation and gratitude to Dr. Saurabh Rajguru, Dr. William Kinsey, UW Health Care Direct team, Agrace Hospice Care team, and former Primary Care Physician for many years, Dr. Kenneth Felz and his nurse Kim.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be donated in memory of Gerry to the Carbone Cancer Center or Agrace Hospice Care.
