Sun Prairie-Gilbert L. ""Gil"" Szymanski, age 87 passed away on March 25, 2010. He was born on December 3, 1922 in Milwaukee, WI the son of Edward and Sophie (Krupke) Szymanski.  Gil graduated from Bay View High School and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (formerly Milwaukee State Teachers College) where he was a member of the Delta Sigma Kappa fraternity.  He married his college sweetheart Reve' Brown in 1948. They had two children Greg Szymanski and Susan Christenson.  Gil was a 4 year varsity football player in high school and college. He was inducted into the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Athletic Hall of Fame.  Gil was a World War II veteran where he served in the Army Air Corps. While in service, he played football for the Spokane Air Force Command. He was a member of the American Legion Post 333 of Sun Prairie.  Gil served as Recreation Director at the Southern Center in Union Grove, WI, Director of Rehabilitation at the Muscatatuck State School in Butterville, Indiana, Principal of Lakeside School in Racine, consultant for Education for State Institutions and for teens in the State Department of Alcohol and Drugs both for State of Wisconsin.  Gil was instrumental in developing a state chapter for A.A.M.D.  He served on boards for the Weisman Center, Access for Independence, A.A.R.C. of Dane County and on the executive board of the Leigh Roberts Transitional House for the chronically emotionally disturbed women.  After retirement, Gil served 18 years as a volunteer interviewer for United Way of Dane County and was active with the Wisconsin Association for Retarded Children.  Gil was an avid jogger for many years, then a walker, biker, swimmer and weight lifter. Exercise was a part of his life. He enjoyed golf but his game never lived up to his hopes or expectations.  He enjoyed his friend's especially friends from his college days.  Gil had a great sense of humor and enjoyed a good joke.  Gil is survived and loved by his wife, Reve'; his children, Greg (Nancy) Szymanski of Madison and Susan (Doug) Christenson of Stoughton; brother and sister- in- law, Herb and Shirley Brown of Barron; uncle, Frank Schlumph of Eau Claire; three nieces and several special cousins and other relatives.  He was preceded in death by his parents, two aunts and two uncles.  A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Cress Funeral Home, Sun Prairie with Msgr. Duane R. Moellenberndt presiding. A time of gathering will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service.
