Gordon Mccann

Gordon Louis "Gordy" McCann passed away December 2, 2011 at age 88. Gordy was born in Madison on November 23, 1923 one of twelve children to the late Leo P. and Dorthea (Schuler) McCann. He was united in marriage to Margaret Austin. She preceded him in death on February 28, 2005. Gordon was a U.S. Navy Veteran. Gordy was proud of his years in the Navy during WWII. He enlisted at a very young age along with his brothers, Ron (Army) and Leo (Marines). Gordy was a member of the crew of the Cruiser "Birmingham," which was a support ship of a carrier. The carrier had been torpedoed and was on fire. Men of the Birmingham were attempting to put out the fire when an explosion occurred. Gordy was wounded, along with many other men.

Gordy lived in Madison his entire life and worked as a Postal Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement. He was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church in Middleton as well as the Knights of Columbus. Gordy enjoyed spending time with children of all ages. He loved playing cards and was an avid traveler. He is survived by his brothers and sister: Patrick McCann, Robert (Donna) McCann, Michael McCann, Rosemary (Eugene) Leonhardt, and Terrance (Donna) McCann; also numerous nieces, nephew, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Margaret, 4 brothers, Leo, Ronald, Donald Jack and Sidney; and 2 sisters, Donna J. Crawford, and Delores Vigdal.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at Cress Funeral Home, 6021 University Avenue with Monsignor Douglas Duschack presiding. Family will greet friends one hour prior to service. Burial will follow at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery.
