Madison - Gordon C. Ranney, age 53 - With deepest sadness we mourn the passing of Gordon Ranney on February 28th, 2016, at the age of 53. He succumbed to a long struggle with cancer surrounded by his family, friends and beloved wife Jeanette. Born in London in 1962 to Austin and Betsey Ranney, Gordon was the third of four brothers who grew up in Madison. He graduated from West High and earned his BFA from the University of Wisconsin before pursuing a life of music and art. Gordon was the bassist and a founding member of Madison's perennially popular band The Gomers. Over 30 years he also played with bands such as Prog, Steely Dane, and VO5, establishing himself as one of the most beloved and respected members of the Madison music scene. His talent in the visual arts led Gordon into a parallel career as a technical illustrator beginning with his years living in Seattle, where he met and married his wife in 1998. Gordon's talent, wit, and unflagging gentle nature profoundly touched the lives of all who knew him. He is survived by his wife Jeanette, his brothers Jay, Doug and David, nieces Emily, Adrienne, Colleen and Phoebe, nephew Christopher, and sisters-in-law Laurie, Sue and Carol. A memorial gathering and a tribute performance by his band mates is being planned for early April. Condolences may be conveyed through CressFuneralService.com.
