Madison -- H. Jean Rowley passed away on April 22, 2010 and was buried on May 6, 2010 .  She was born H. Jean Werderitsch in Milwaukee on March 23, 19 27 . She grew up and attended schools in southeastern Wisconsin and in Poughkeepsie , New York .  Jean earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in French and German in 1948 and a Library Science degree in 1951 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison .   In 1990 Jean retired as Chief of Cataloging and emeritus Assistant Professor from the University's General Library System.  She served 32 years as a highly esteemed university librarian in Madison and at Iowa State University .  For a decade Jean was a base librarian for the United States Army and the United States Air Force in Europe and in the United States .  In many trips to mountains, forests, and ice fields, Jean traveled on all seven continents.  Jean supported the arts, and especially valued subscriptions with the Lyric Opera of Chicago.  Through her life she was devoted to the welfare of wild animals and to the pet cats of friends and of her own.  Joan was active in retirement, including translating books into braille and other services to the blind.  She regularly delivered meals on wheels for Independent Living.  Jean was preceded in death by her husband, L. Ben Rowley, and by her parents, George and Ethel (Smith) Werderitsch.  She is fondly remembered by many friends. Â
