Helen Mae Thompson

Madison -- Helen N. Thompson, age 101, peacefully passed away Saturday, September 6, 2008.   Helen was born in Baraboo, on February 14, 1907, the daughter of Sigmund and Myra Neubauer.   In 1918, the family moved to Madison, where Harold, Helen's bother was attending the University of Wisconsin.   Helen graduated from Madison's Central High School and the Milwaukee Teacher's College, now UW-Milwaukee.   She began her career as a first grade teacher at Emerson School in September of 1928, where she continued until her retirement in February 1968.   Helen married John Wesley Thompson on June 28, 1930.   They built their home in Shorewood Hills in 1937 and spent wonderful years together until his death in December 1998.   Through the years and until the time of her death, Helen remained in close contact with many of her former students and their families which gave her great happiness.   Helen was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, a long time member of Madison Civics Club and Blackhawk Country Club, a former board member of Madison Symphony Orchestra League, the Shorewood Garden Club and Gourmet group.   John and Helen were volunteers at Madison General Hospital (now Meriter) for many years.   Helen is preceded by her husband, parents and her brother, Harold.   She is survived by a nephew, John Neubauer of Arizona; a niece, Jeanne Walker of California; and a number of cousins.   Helen is further survived by her dear neighbors and friends who have been so good to her over the years.   In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Helen's name to Hospice Care.   A private memorial service will be held.
