Madison -- Helen N. Thompson, age 101, peacefully passed away Saturday, September 6, 2008. Â Helen was born in Baraboo, on February 14, 1907, the daughter of Sigmund and Myra Neubauer. Â In 1918, the family moved to Madison, where Harold, Helen's bother was attending the University of Wisconsin. Â Helen graduated from Madison's Central High School and the Milwaukee Teacher's College, now UW-Milwaukee. Â She began her career as a first grade teacher at Emerson School in September of 1928, where she continued until her retirement in February 1968. Â Helen married John Wesley Thompson on June 28, 1930. Â They built their home in Shorewood Hills in 1937 and spent wonderful years together until his death in December 1998. Â Through the years and until the time of her death, Helen remained in close contact with many of her former students and their families which gave her great happiness. Â Helen was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, a long time member of Madison Civics Club and Blackhawk Country Club, a former board member of Madison Symphony Orchestra League, the Shorewood Garden Club and Gourmet group. Â John and Helen were volunteers at Madison General Hospital (now Meriter) for many years. Â Helen is preceded by her husband, parents and her brother, Harold. Â She is survived by a nephew, John Neubauer of Arizona; a niece, Jeanne Walker of California; and a number of cousins. Â Helen is further survived by her dear neighbors and friends who have been so good to her over the years. Â In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Helen's name to Hospice Care. Â A private memorial service will be held.
