Howard Emil Hoveland

September 2, 1931 — October 21, 2008

MADISON- Howard Emil Hoveland, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, age 77, passed away in the company of his family in Madison on Tuesday, October 21, 2008, from pneumonia. He was born on September 2, 1931, the son of Emil and Caroline (Weishaar) Hoveland, and lived in Madison his entire life. Howard graduated from Madison East High School in 1949, attended UW-Madison, and then was commissioned in the US Army Core of Engineers, served during the Korean War, and honorably discharged from Reserves in 1960 as 1st Lt. Upon returning from overseas, he was united in marriage with his beloved wife of 54 years, Jaclyn Louise Dresen, also from Madison, in August 1954. Together they raised two children and have since been blessed with six grandchildren. Howard started his long career with Research Products Corporation in 1954 while completing his degree in accounting, where he quickly rose through the ranks from accounting clerk to purchasing agent, was named Vice President of Purchasing in 1972 and subsequently Vice President of Manufacturing in 1976, where he served until his retirement in 1994. He was a member of Rotary, the Madison Elks and Blackhawk Country Club, and served on SCORE after retirement to assist developing business owners. During his life, Howard enjoyed and kept many friends, colleagues and associates, entertaining them with stories and one-liners. He loved playing all kinds of cards games, especially bridge with wife Jackie (with the inevitable post-play kibitzing). Howard was always active and creative. He had a passion for woodworking and building, with a workshop full of arcane tools and possibly useful doodads, leading to his membership in the Woodpeckers Club with fellows of similar talents, and subsequently to his ""second career"" as a long-time volunteer and leader of the annual benefit sale for the Madison Children's Museum. Each year, he and his many volunteer friends and colleagues repaired and prepped hundreds of items for each sale. Howard was very active in the sale organization for several years until health no longer permitted it, and continued repairs until his death. Howard is survived by his wife, Jackie; his son, Greg Hoveland and wife Sally of Plano, TX; and daughter, Elizabeth and husband Kevin Kasmiskie of Edina, MN; six grandchildren: Justin, Robert, Daniel, Lisa, Allison, and Spencer; sister, Carol and husband Don Helfrecht of Madison; and niece, Karen. Services are scheduled at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 24, at the CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison, where friends may call from 9:00 AM until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Madison Children's Museum, 100 State Street, Madison, WI, 53703 or http://www.madisonchildrensmuseum.org//
