Hubert Vencill Moss, Jr.
Hubert V. Moss, Jr. passed away on October 10, 2024 after a long and blessed life. He was born on January 7, 1937 to Hubert V. Moss, Sr. and (Grace) Esther (Miller) Moss. Hugh grew up in Weirton, West Virginia where he was a good student and big brother to his sister, Margaret. He enjoyed golfing, playing saxophone, and was the drum major of his high school marching band.
He graduated from West Virginia University, Morgantown in 1959 and attended the joint medical school program at the University of West Virginia and the Medical College of Virginia before completing a residency in dermatology at the Medical College of Virginia in 1966. Following residency, Hugh joined the Air Force at the rank of Captain and was stationed at Andrews Airforce Base in Washington, DC. While training in Texas, he met the love of his life, Mary J. Tschudy, RN and they married in 1967. In 1968 upon completion of Air Force duties, the couple settled in Madison, WI, where Hugh was a dermatologist. He was initially in private practice, then joined the Jackson Clinic that became Physicians Plus, then merged with UW Health. Hugh also had an appointment and enjoyed teaching as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Division of Dermatology at the University of Wisconsin. Hugh established the Moss Lectureship in Dermatology jointly between Meriter Hospital and the UW School of Medicine and Public Health to promote education and camaraderie for local dermatologists. Hugh and Mary raised their three children in Madison, spending much of their time at their family cottage at Pleasant Lake, making many long-lasting friends and memories.
Hugh enjoyed playing bridge, tennis, sailing, and became an ardent supporter of the UW Badgers, holding season tickets for both football and basketball for many years. In 1972 he served as the president of the Badger Basketball Boosters Club. After retiring, the couple became snowbirds, wintering in Sarasota, FL, where they made many cherished friends. They joined the Sarasota/Manatee Chapter of the Wisconsin Alumni Association where both Hugh and Mary served as president. Hugh loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren, often traveling to Disney World and Cancun, Mexico.
After Mary passed away in 2017, Hugh moved to Attic Angel Place, where he was happy and sociable. He was known for his fun-loving personality, kind smile, and love of music, especially singing. The family wishes to thank the staff at Attic Angel Place for their kindness and care over the past seven and a half years.
Hugh is survived by son Dr. Mark H. (Colleen) Moss of Madison; daughter Linda Moss (formerly Kwiatkowski) of Madison; daughter Amy (Steven) McKenna of Woodbury, MN; and eight dearly loved grandchildren; Hannah Moss; Liv (Grea) Cuyser; Danielle, Brianne, and Matthew McKenna; and Soren, Hazel, and Mabel Moss. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, his parents, his sister, two brothers-in-law, and son-in-law.
