Sun Prairie - Irene Myrtle Atzen, age 90, passed away on Sunday, May 10, 2009, at Oak Park Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Madison. She was born on February 27, 1919, in Dorchester, Wisconsin, the daughter of Joel and Mary (Tischendorf) Winchell. Irene was united in marriage to Melvin Atzen on November 23, 1938 in Davenport, Iowa. She and Melvin met and resided in Evanston, IL for 15 years during the Big Band era. Irene along with her husband owned and operated The Coffee Shop and Bus Depot in Abbotsford, Wisconsin, for 20 years. Irene enjoyed gardening, traveling and reading.
Always thoughtful and helpful to friends, family and strangers alike, her genuine concern and cheerful demeanor will be missed and remembered.
Irene is survived by her children, Betty (Kenneth) Riegert, Bill (Janice) Atzen, Linda (Howard Sprengel) Atzen and Nancy Atzen; grandchildren, Scott, Sally, Sandy, Shelly, Shelley, Sherry and Sarah; 13 great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Melvin, brothers, Albert and Ernie Winchell and sister, Margaret.
Funeral services will be held at SUN PRAIRIE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 702 North Street, Sun Prairie, on Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Scott Carlson officiating. Burial will follow at Sun Prairie Memory Gardens in Sun Prairie. A visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday, May 13, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
Irene's family would like to extend a special thank you to the Colonial Club and Colonial View, to the staff at the Dean Oncology Clinic, HospiceCare and Oak Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
