Irene King

MADISON/WAUNAKEE - Irene V. (Wells) King, age 92, passed away peacefully at Waunakee Manor on Sunday Feb. 28, 2016. She was born July 20, 1923 in Chicago, IL. The daughter of the late LeRoy and Irene (Waller) Wells. She married William James Butler on Feb. 7, 1948 in Chicago. They had many good years raising their 4 children in Philadelphia, PA., Oak Park, IL. northern Wisconsin, and Madison. William preceded her in death on March 12, 1971. Irene later met and married Clarence C. King on May 7, 1977 in Madison, he preceded her in death on Oct. 27, 2008.
Irene was a member of many different parishes over the years including St. Bernard in Madison, St. John the Baptist in Waunakee and St. Maria Goretti in Madison. She was an Administrative Assistant to the University of Wisconsin Vice President and Controller, longtime member of BPW - Business and Professional Women's Club. Irene was a proud member of the Friends of Schumacher Farm in Waunakee.
She enjoyed traveling with her husband Clarence. They spent many winters in Scottsdale, AZ., and also took trips to Europe, New Zeeland, Australia Alaska and Hawaii. Irene was a cultured lady, appreciating art and nature, and nurtured our love of music through her piano playing, singing and dancing. She was also an avid photographer and was never without her camera. Irene was always interested in a robust conversation about everything from sports, to politics, to current events, and of course her love of her favorite TV channel, TCM. As a season ticket holder for many years, Irene loved cheering on the UW Football Team with her husband Clarence.
Irene is survived by her children; Bill Butler of Waunakee; Brian (Allana) Butler of Sterling, AK; Kevin Butler of Madison; Maureen (Patrick) Maly of Waunakee; 9 grandchildren; Alex King, LeAndra, Nathan, Kristin and Ben Miller, Ross, Carson and Sawyer Maly, and Shannon (T.J.) Riley; 4 great grandchildren, 2 step sons, Michael King of Washington, MA; Richard (Sarah Brehm) King of Richland Center; two step-daughters Barb (Don) Hady of Sun Prairie; and Rosemary (William Jones) King of Mesa, AZ., and also a cousin James (Joan) Waller of Northbrook, IL., who was raised with Irene like a brother.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husbands William J. Butler and Clarence C. King, brothers Calvin and Robert.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM on Sat. March 5, 2016 at ST. MARIA GORETTI CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5313 Flad Ave. Madison, with Msgr. Michael Burke presiding. Burial will be at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery. A visitation will be from 9:00 until the time of the Mass on Sat. at the church.
