J. Kent Tweeten, MD, 96, of Madison, died peacefully on July 21, 2012 at Agrace Hospice Center in Fitchburg. Kent is survived by five of his six children, Caroline (David) Sheperd of Madison; Eloise Tweeten (Jack Strange) of Santa Rosa, CA; Rolf (Carrie) Tweeten of Raleigh, NC; Elizabeth (Charles) Johnson of Verona; and Amy Tweeten (Tony Vollmar) of Petoskey, MI. He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren, ages 8-28: Lindsey (Alex), Cole, Sierra, Kirsten, Kent, Blake, Kelsey, Arthur, Dana, and Jacob. Kent was preceded in death by his brothers Sigvard and Paul; sister Ruth (Grina); wife June (1970); and eldest son Paul (2006).

Kent was born in Rochelle, IL to Rev. Jacob and Maud Tweten. He received a Bachelor degree from Luther College, and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1938. He enlisted in the US Army in June, 1942, and served in the US Army Medical Corps in Europe from August 12, 1943 until his discharge on May 23, 1946, attaining the rank of Major.

Kent opened a general medical practice in Madison in 1946, and continued to practice in Madison until his retirement in 1988. He was known as a dedicated, caring family doctor. Kent demonstrated pride in his Norweigan heritage through his support of the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, the Norwegian-American Geneology Center and Naeseth Library and his membership in the Madison Torske Klubben. He was a longtime member of Bethel Lutheran Church, raising his family in the Lutheran faith. Kent enjoyed travel and was a loyal fan of the Badgers, Packers and Brewers.

In the Tweeten household father truly knew best, teaching by example through his humble, steadfast devotion to family and serving others. Kent was a resident of the Oakwood West retirement community, and services will be held in the RESURRECTION CHAPEL at OAKWOOD VILLAGE UNIVERSITY WOODS, 6205 Mineral Point Road, Madison on Saturday, July 28th at 10:30 AM with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Agrace Hospice and the Naeseth Library. The family would like to thank the staff at Oakwood Village, Meriter Hospital (six tower), Agrace Hospice center and Dr. Veronica Heide for their compassionate care and concern.
