Jacob Evanson

December 11, 1934 — February 20, 2010

Madison -- Jacob (Jock) Evanson, age 75, died peacefully on Saturday, February 20, 2010 at HospiceCare, in Fitchburg. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, where his parents were faculty members at Western Reserve University. The family then moved to Pittsburg. He attended Swarthmore College, where he met his wife, Elizabeth (Betty). Jock served in the armed forces as a clarinetist in the U.S. Army band and then received a Master's degree in musicology from Columbia University. After graduate work in psychology at Yale University he became a faculty member at Southern Illinois University. He came to Madison in 1971 and earned a Master's degree in statistics at the University of Wisconsin. He joined the academic staff at the university, serving as a statistical consultant for many years. Jock is survived by his wife of 51 years; his children, Evan and Virginia (Suren) Avanesyan; and his grandchildren, Anna and Alexander Avanesyan. His family gave him great pleasure. A memorial service will be held Friday, April 23, 2010 at 4:30 PM at FIRST UNITARIAN SOCIETY, 900 University Bay Drive, Madison WI 53705. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to HospiceCare, Inc., 5395 E. Cheryl Pkwy, Madison, WI 53711, the First Unitarian Society of Madison, or a charity of choice.
