James R. Armstrong, 333 Samuel Drive , Madison , WI , died March 10, 2009 at the age of 97. He was the eldest child of James McNabb Armstrong and Daisy Reid Armstrong. He was born May 22, 19 11 in Berlin , WI . All four of his siblings preceded him in death. Jim graduated from Janesville Senior High School and from Janesville Business College . He was employed as an accountant for forty years at General Motors (GM) and also had a real estate business for many years. He was a 32nd degree Mason, an Elk, an Eagle, a Moose, a member of the Janesville Chamber of Commerce, a Shriner, and a court appointed appraiser for Rock County , Wisconsin .   In his spare time he was a member of the Janesville Toastmasters Club. He married Shirley K. Kauffman shortly after becoming employed at GM. They were members of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Janesville , where Jim was the treasurer of the church for many years and was instrumental in the process of building a new church located on Center Avenue . Jim had a true passion for golf. After his retirement from GM and through his early nineties, he played golf nearly every day. He especially enjoyed golf trips with his son and grandsons as well as many visits to Florida with his family. Jim had 7 hole-in-ones in his lifetime, his most recent one coming at the age of 84. His summers were enriched by weekends on Lake Wisconsin where he enjoyed fishing, boating, and of course golf. Jim was avid reader and spent many hours in the library finding and copying articles that he thought would benefit his family.   A life long asthma sufferer, Jim had many extra years of life due to the care of Drs. Robert D. Gilbert and R. Francis Ryan. He also enjoyed independent living with the loving care of the Croake family (Bernie, Tim, and Liam), Janet Fisher and in the last weeks, the Attic Angel staff. The family is grateful for their devotion and support. Jim is survived by his two children: Bradley Armstrong (Barbara) and Judith Twesme (John); his five grandchildren: Brett, Bryce (Julianna), Bryan (Kerri) Armstrong and Garrett ( Shannon ), and Kyle Guenther. He has three great grandchildren: Sydney and Logan Guenther, and Ellie Grace Armstrong.     A service of Christian burial will be held at the Good Shepherd Chapel, Bethel Lutheran Church , 312 Wisconsin Ave. , Madison (53703), at 4:00 pm , on Sunday March 15, 2009 with Pastor Bill White officiating.
