Madison – James “Jim” McNeal Olson - It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of James “Jim” McNeal Olson, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Jim passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on February 4, 2025, at the age of 76.
Born on November 26, 1948, in Elgin, Illinois, Jim was raised in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, where he spent his formative years. He was the son of William G. Olson and Louise M. Olson, both of whom preceded him in death. Jim’s life was one of service, compassion, and dedication to those around him.
After high school, Jim joined the U.S. Navy alongside his good friend, Mike Flasch. He proudly served as a signalman aboard the USS Independence, an experience that shaped much of his character.
After his time in the Navy, Jim met his wife, Sharon. They were married on May 26, 1973, and settled in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. Jim spent much of his career as a teacher in the Oconomowoc Area School District, where his love for working with young people was evident. Alongside his friends and colleagues Denny Rinehart and Scott Raduka, Jim coached Football and Track and Field. Through these endeavors, he was able to instill values of teamwork, perseverance, and discipline in young athletes who would go on to remember him fondly for years to come.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Olson, with whom he shared a lifetime of memories. He is also survived by his children: Tom (Addi) Olson, Chuck (Katie) Olson, and Sarah (Stefano) Walczyk. Jim was a proud grandfather to Kaden, Lars, Ingrid, Anders, Halina, and Aleksy, who will remember him as “Silly Grandpa.” He is also survived by his brothers Bill (Kay) Olson and Tom (Marquis) Olson, who were always by his side in both times of joy and sorrow. He is survived by brothers-in-law Gary (Mary) Shafer, John Shafer (Tim Lober) sisters-in-law Cindy (Jim) Flood and Kim (Mike) Reilly
Jim was a man who lived by the motto of always helping others. Whether it was lending a hand to family and friends or offering guidance to his students and athletes, his generosity and selflessness were evident in the actions he took. He was a person who made a difference in countless lives. He will be remembered fondly for his big smile, kindness, and wisdom.
A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday February 15, 2025, at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 1310 Emerald Terrace, Sun Prairie, WI 53590. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until the service at the funeral home on Saturday.
Family and friends are invited to join in celebrating the incredible man he was. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Oconomowoc Scholarship Fund or Clean Lakes Alliance.
Jim will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love, service, and dedication will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
