MADISON- In the early hours of December 24, 2017, Jim passed away with family at his side at Agrace HospiceCare. He was the adored only child of Benjamin Langdon and Laura (Solem) Langdon, born on May 9, 1928. The family lived in Milwaukee through most of Jim's childhood but returned to Madison (which was his father's hometown) after World War II. Jim graduated in 1947 from Madison Central High School. He attended UW-Madison, majoring in Soils and rowing on the Men's Crew. He earned three varsity letters in 1949, 1950, and 1951. Rowing was a highlight of his university years and his children heard many stories about various trips and races. Another highlight of his university years, of course was meeting the love of his life, Joan Weavers. Jim and Joan celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this past summer with a trip to their beloved Door County.
Jim was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church choir for fifty years. He had a beautiful tenor voice and a great appreciation for music. At Agrace, he was soothed by Handel's Messiah along with other religious selections. Jim was a charter member of the Rotary Club of Madison-West-Towne-Middleton, a member of Madison Torske Klubben (Norwegian Club), and the Capitol City Corvair Club. He was known for repairing anything from an engine to a pocket watch. Jim was very much a "people person" and the family always joked that he could walk into a room of strangers and leave with a handful of new best friends. The family wishes to thank all of his friends for their love and support throughout his illness, especially the Panera Bread/Lane's Bakery coffee friends, his car buddies, church friends, caring neighbors, and his Tuesday pal, Guy.
Jim leaves behind his wife Joan; sons William (Patti) Langdon, Robert (Lisa) Langdon; daughter Mary (Greg) Wescott; Grandchildren, Erin Wescott, Michael Wescott (Kristy), John Langdon, Sarah Langdon, Sonja Langdon, and Nora Langdon; great-grandsons, Logan Wescott and Brycen Wescott.
The family wishes to thank the many wonderful angels at Agrace HospiceCare, both the home care team and the resident staff. You were so loving and supportive to Jim and our family. We also thank Pastor John Swanson for his meaningful visits. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Agrace Foundation, 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI 53711 or Bethel Lutheran Church Senior Choir would be greatly appreciated.
Funeral services will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church, 312 Wisconsin Ave, Madison, on Tuesday, January 16, 2017, at 11:00 am with Pastor John Swanson officiating. A visitation will be held from 10:00 am until the time of the service. A private family burial will take place at Forest Hill Cemetery.
Please share your memories of James.
