James "Jim" Lee Lund passed away peacefully on April 28, 2017. Jim was born March 23, 1936, in Madison, Wisconsin, to parents Selma Johnson Lund and Henry Nelson Lund. Jim was the youngest of 8 children.
Jim's growing up years were spent on Madison's East side, but he graduated from West High School, class of 1954, followed by 3 plus years at the U.W. Son of a Norwegian builder contractor, Jim learned the trade from his father, uncle and brothers. He constructed over 500 dwelling units in Madison, but this job ended after a severe stroke, from which he courageously fought back for many years. In high school, Jim played basketball and marched in the band. Always a lover of sports, Jim spent 30 years in bowling leagues, played city softball and slow pitch, and golfed. He kept season tickets to the Badger Football games. Jim was confirmed in Trinity Lutheran, but he and Louise later became Quakers (Madison Friend's Meeting). He spent 6 years in the Red Arrow Divison of the National Guard. He joined UNA, Kiwanis, and was active politically. He enjoyed later years with the "old geezers club" at McDonald's, Northport.
Jim loved to travel. Through the years he drove the family to places such as Disney Land, the Grand Canyon, Disney World, and Florida beaches. He and Louise also traveled to Vietnam peace projects, France, and Norway. Closer trips included visits to Wiota, the family homestead. They enjoyed visiting family in this country and Norway.
Jim is survived by his wife, Louise, and children Richard Gowin (Melissa and Matthew); Ken Gowin (wife Patti, children Jimmy (Allie), David and Riley); Susan Lund (Ernesto Romero); and Cynthia Lund (David Rogers, children Kate and Alexandra). Children and Grandchildren were the loves of his life. Other survivors include brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and remarkable nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Alva Voss, Harvey Lund, Charlotte Stemrich, Dorothy Greninger, Ruth Sorenson, Donald Henry Lund, and Marjorie Millin.
A celebration of Jim's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at Madison Friend's Meeting, 1704 Roberts Court, Madison, Wisconsin 53711. Private burial will take place at Sunset Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to make donations to Madison Friend's Meeting at the address above.
