James Onsrud

April 2, 1931 — April 27, 2014

Stoughton- James A. Onsrud, age 83, passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at VA Hospital in Madison, surrounded by his family. He was born in Stoughton on April 2, 1931, son of Halvor and Thora (Hanson) Onsrud.

James graduated from Stoughton High School in 1949. He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1949 and was honorably discharged in 1952. James joined the WI Air Nation Guard as a full time Air technician in 1954 and was discharged in 1963. He was employed by Cummings Enterprises until he retired in 1994. On April 20, 1957 James married Mary Olson. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, and the Stoughton American Legion.

James is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary; son, Larry; grandchildren, Christopher (Kristin) and Stephanie (Nate) Smith; great grandchild Dominick; brother, Jerry of Colorado and sister in-law Nancy Havey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael; brothers, Donald and Harold; and sisters, Gladys Harried, Ruth Ehle, Hazel Solem and Wanda Trulson; and brother in-laws Howard Olson and Arne Havey.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at First Lutheran Church in Stoughton, with Rev. Richard Halom officiating. Military honors will follow. Friends and relatives are invited to a luncheon in the church fellowship hall. Friends may greet the family from 12 noon until the time of the services on Saturday.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of the Madison Veterans Hospital.

James will be greatly missed by his wife, son, and grandchildren. He will always be in our thoughts and prayers.
