James Phelps ”Jay”, age 63, passed away unexpectedly due to a heart attack on Saturday, December 10, 2022. He was born February 18, 1959, in Chicago, Illinois, son of Jack and Margarite “Ricky” Phelps. Jay lived northwest of Chicago for 35 years, graduating from high school, followed by the University of Tampa in 1982. In 1983, Jay married the love of his life Kelly. They moved to Wisconsin to open the Hill Street Bed and Breakfast in Spring Green for 20 years. Jay worked at Land’s End for 17 years before moving on the Great Lakes Boat Building School, which he truly loved. For the last 5 years, he was with Duluth Trading Company.
Jay had a great sense of humor and always had something funny to say. He loved to travel, sailing, scuba, bike riding and UW women's hockey.
Jay is survived by his wife, Kelly; sister Laurie, his niece Alyssa; brother-in law Don and his husband Horacio and many cousins. Jay is also survived by our beloved cats. Sparky, Tigger, Roo, Cesar and Sheba and many, many friends. Jay is preceded in death by his parents Jack and Ricky (Margarite).He is preceded in death by his parents Jack and Ricky (Margarite)
A celebration of life will be at a later date.
