Madison - Beloved husband, father, friend, and physician James Trotter Schulz (Jim) passed on peacefully Saturday morning, July 16, 2016 at St. Mary's Hospital where he spent much of his professional life as a General Surgeon. Throughout the days prior to his death, he was surrounded by friends, family, and former colleagues.
Jim was born October 21, 1929 in Milwaukee, WI. He completed his medical training at Marquette University (Medical College of Wisconsin). He and Nancy (nee Bassuener) Schulz married in November 1958 and they shared 43 years together until Nancy's passing in 2001.
He proudly served as a physician on a naval aircraft carrier in the Pacific Fleet and on a transport ship stationed off the coast of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.
Jim and Nancy moved their growing family to Madison in 1965. He was a founding partner of the East Madison Clinic (now Dean Clinic) and was a respected, gifted, and kind surgeon with a unique bedside manner.
Jim's four children, Lori (Phillip) Cherney of Visalia, CA, Jean Schulz (Ed Graham) of Lostine, OR, David Schulz (Jessica Cerullo) of Walla Walla, WA, and Jennifer Schulz (Mark Patterson) of Seattle, WA in addition to his grandchildren: Meade, Greer, Blythe, Wren, Claire, Sam, and Valia; and his great grandson, Carson, honor his life and memory. Nancy's sisters Sally Haupt, Kathlyn Putnam, Lorna Sorenson, Lorelle (P. Michael) Mahoney have been a steadfast part of his life since he and Nancy met.
Since Nancy's passing in 2001, Jim cultivated a rich community of friends who brought him joy and shared intellectual conversation, dry wit, and lots and lots of coffee.
A wake to share stories and memories of Jim's life will be held on Sunday, July 17 at Ancora Coffee Shop (2871 University Ave.) from 3-5 PM.
