James Weiland

February 25, 1962 — June 7, 2021

James (Jim) Weiland, passed away June 7, 2021 at the age of 59. He leaves behind his wife Rita (Wirth) Weiland, many friends and family who love him. He retired from Thermo Fisher having started his 35-year career at Mattson (Nicolet.) Jim graduated from Madison Memorial, took coursework at UW Platteville and Wisconsin School of Electronics.  Jim was a life-long learner and took on new highly technical products to help customers transition and do their work. Using his dry wit and sense of humor to help family, friends and colleagues.

He and his wife Rita loved travel adventures and found the perfect spot for the last solar eclipse and planned future trips to go exploring and taking pictures. Those who knew Jim know that he was a listener, mentor, educator, bicyclist and most notably an observer. He spoke when he had something to say. He was always ready to go for a bike ride, hike or explore a new area.  You knew interesting things were coming when he carried his giant pack that held his cameras and lens. He had a wry smile when he found people and things amusing. He loved music and that was his joy and solace throughout his life but especially at the end. He would get lost in jazz, Gershwin, and orchestral music. Jim and Rita traveled to experience live music and art. He said, “Seeing Yo-yo Ma live was magical.” He shared his joy by introducing others to the music he loved.

His life-long friends gathered in his last moments and told stories that gave insight to the shenanigans that he and good friends conjured up. Thinking of Jim today and his pragmatism there were some surprises which will never go into print.
