MADISON - Jane Cummings Anderson, age 77, died on February 24, 2010, at Sunny Hill Health Care Center, after suffering from Alzheimer's disease for a number of years.
She was born to John and LaJune Cummings on September 23, 1932 in Chicago, the city that she grew to love. Jane graduated from Fenger High School, and received a degree in elementary education from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL, in 1954. She began her teaching career in the Dalton-Riverdale school district on Chicago's south side.
Jane met her future husband, Bob Anderson, when they were both counselors at a UW Music Clinic. They were married on June 22, 1957. After they had their first child, they began their life as a family in the Meadowood neighborhood on Madison's west side, where they joined the Orchard Ridge United Church of Christ. They welcomed their second child in 1964. Jane was a stay-at-home mother after her children were born and spent her time caring for her children and making a loving home for her family.
Jane had a second love: music. She won several piano competitions throughout high school and college. She was a longtime member of her church choir, sang with the Madison Symphony Chorus for 30 years, and was also an assistant in a Yamaha music program for young children. Throughout the years, she enjoyed creating music with her son and daughter and always supported them in their musical aspirations.
She also enjoyed quilting with her church group, sewing clothes, and crafts. Her friends and family were the recipients of her annual homemade Christmas ornaments, and the house was always perfectly decorated for every season. She sewed most of her own clothes, and derived great pleasure from sewing dresses for her first granddaughter.
Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, on January 12, 2010, and her parents. She is survived by her children, Elizabeth Schultz (Dave) of McFarland, and Matthew Anderson (Debbie) of Cedarburg; grandchildren Rebecca and Justin Schultz of McFarland, and Marine Corporal Andrew Anderson of Camp Pendleton, Calif; brother Grant Cummings (Jeanette) of Rhinelander; brother- and sister-in-law Dave and Sharon Anderson of Eden Prairie, Minn; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
A memorial service will be held at 1 pm on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at the Orchard Ridge United Church of Christ, 1501 Gilbert Rd., Madison. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. The family would like to thank the staff at Sunny Hill for the wonderful care that Jane received.Visits: 0
