Janet Austrian Fisher, 91, beloved wife, devoted sister and adored aunt, left this world and joined her beloved husband on October 5, 2009. Janet was born on January 17, 1918, in Baltimore, Maryland to Dr. Charles Robert Austrian, an infectious diseases expert at Johns Hopkins University, and Florence Hochschild Austrian, an artist. She attended Bennington College for her undergraduate education and received a Ph. D in Economics from Columbia University in 1950. While at Columbia she met and fell in love with Burton R. Fisher. Janet and Burt were married on January 16, 1949. They later moved to Wisconsin to teach at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Janet taught economics at the University of Wisconsin for a number of years. She and Burt, a Sociology Professor, traveled, researched, and lived in many places throughout their careers including Michigan, Norway, and Israel.
Janet was predeceased by her husband, Burton, in 1988, her parents, and her brother, Robert Austrian. She is survived by her niece, Ruth Pfeffer and family of Dix Hills, New York, and her nephews and their families: Robert Fisher of New York, New York, Dr. Marc Fisher of Agawam, Massachusetts, and Joel Fisher of Plantation, Florida.
Janet has requested that no services be held. The family requests that any memorials be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
