MADISON
Janice K. Kelly, age 85, of Madison, WI died on Sept. 30, 2017 at The Villa at Middleton Village in Middleton WI.
She was born Feb. 23, 1932 in Madison, WI to Arthur and Magda (Nelson) Kittleson. Jan graduated from Central High School in Madison in June 1950.
In 1954 she started working for the federal government in the draft board and selective service in Milwaukee, WI. She married James R. Kelly on April 11, 1957. She started working for the Forest Products Laboratory in 1960 and retired as an Engineering Technician in 1994.
Jan was an active volunteer in many types of community organizations since the 1960's. As a member of a volunteer group through Forest Products Lab, once a month on Saturday mornings she and her fellow volunteers would provide a hot meal at the Wil Mar Center for people in need. Over the years Jan (and her fellow band of volunteers) would volunteer for numerous events throughout Madison, including but not limited to the Art Fair on the Square, Taste of Madison, Kites on Ice, the Holiday Parade and the Crazy Legs walk.
Jan was honored with a community service award in 1999 from the Greater Madison Federal Agency Association for her work with Wil Mar. Jan also received a senior service award from the Rotary Club of Madison recognizing her volunteer work. Jan was featured in the news section "Know your Madisonian" in the May 16, 2004 edition of the WI State Journal.
Since Jan retired in 1994 she became famous for making varieties of banana bread and distributing loaves to practically everyone she knew. She helped make pfeffernusse annually at the St. James Catholic Church and made baby blankets that she donated to local women and children shelters, aid societies and local police and fire departments.
Jan is survived by her twin sister Jean Oliversen; sisters Thea Cooke and Carol Stern; brother Chet Kittleson; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband James R. Kelly; brother Ted Kittleson and sisters Marge Alexis, Ruth Pryor and Greta Johnson Hammonds.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at the Madison Christian Community, 7118 Old Sauk Road, Madison. A visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Please join us for a meal following the service.
