WAUNAKEE-Jean Marie Lenling (Wipperfurth), age 93, passed away Saturday, November 30, 2019 with her three children surrounding her. She was a resident of Attic Angels for the past 6 years. She was born March 22, 1926 to Helen (Theis) and Alois Wipperfurth in Madison, WI. She attended Madison East High School and attended the University of Wisconsin Madison. She was married 60 years to the late William G. Lenling.
Jean was active in the Madison philanthropic community. Jean, with her two dear friends, Jane Schiefelbein and Petti Rudy, started Edgefest in 1973. The festival continued through 1999. The event significantly help stabilize the financial stability of the school. She was instrumental in starting Concerts on the Square and numerous other events. She was also an Attic Angel for 35 years. She had a long career working at the University of Wisconsin Book Store and her employee discount was heavily used purchasing Badger apparel and textbooks for her family which was greatly appreciated.
Jean was an avid gardener. She was a true Badger fan her entire life. She especially loved Badger Basketball and the UW marching band.
Jean and her late husband Bill were loyal friends and were part of a "pot luck" group that met monthly for over 40 years. Jean true to her gracious nature would prepare delicious meals for her children's friends and families. Jean never forgot a birthday or anniversary and taught her children the lovely tradition of sending thank you notes.
Jean is survived by her loving children, Mary Lenling (Mark Shircel), Bill (Lynn) Lenling, and Ann (Jeff) Schlapp and grandchildren Mia, Ana, Alli, Carl, Grace, William, and Henry.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, December 5th at 11:00 am at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 209 South Street, Waunakee with Msgr. Gunn presiding. A visitation will be held from 9:30 am until time of service. Internment will take place at 2:30 p.m. at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery in Madison. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Attic Angels, or Agrace Hospice.
