Jean M. Thuerer

Jean Margaret Thuerer, age 74, passed away at home in Madison on November 26, 2024. She was born in Rhinelander on June 14, 1950, the daughter of George and Lavon (Becky) Thuerer. She attended McCord Elementary, Rhinelander Junior High, and was a 1968 graduate of Rhinelander High School.

Jean then enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she earned her degree in nursing. For the next forty years, she dedicated herself to service as an intensive-care nurse, for a short period in Salt Lake City and then for many years at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison. She was a kind, gentle, caring, compassionate, and deeply religious person, wonderfully well-suited to her chosen profession in health care.

Jean also was a talented artist. She showed her works at small venues in the Madison area and in juried group shows around the country. She was a regular entrant in the annual summer art show at Nicolet College, where several of her pieces earned ribbons of distinction from the judges. Friends and family encouraged her to show her works more widely at art fairs in the Madison area, but the marketing side of the art world held little appeal for her. Her joy came in the creation of her art and in the calm and peace of her studio.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Steven Engle of Madison. Survivors include her brothers John of Boise, Thomas of Chicago, and Steven’s son Fred of Madison.
