Jerome "Jerry" E. Schenck, a dedicated U.S. Air Force Vietnam veteran, left us suddenly on February 27, 2024, in the quiet company of his beloved dogs. His journey began October 31, 1949, marking the start of a life filled with unwavering service, boundless compassion, kindness and an infectious love for the natural world that he eagerly shared with everyone around him.

Jerry’s legacy is one of love, service and dedication. He is mourned and celebrated by his daughters, Nicole (Joshua Webster) Meadowcroft, Michelle (Craig) Hammerling, and his adored granddaughters Brooklynn, Brenna, Samantha, Harper, Cayla and Laney. He is also survived by his siblings Janice Thompson, Jackie Schenck, Joel (Debbie) Schenck, brother-in-law George Babcock, and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, Edmund and Jean (Ryan) Schenck, sister Judy Babcock, and brothers-in-law Charles Thompson and Tom Serocki. He leaves behind many treasured family and friends including his extended family Shelly (Tim) Goldade, Nick (Maria) Woldt, Lexi and Giovanna.

Jerry’s story is one of service. A proud graduate of Sun Prairie High School, he honed his skills as an aircraft mechanic in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. His transition to civilian life saw him applying his meticulous craftsmanship in auto body repair before working in the fixtures industry as an installer for retail stores across the country. His commitment to community service shone brightly during his years as an EMT in Sun Prairie and later, in his supportive role within the Sun Prairie Area School District, where he found joy and purpose in working with the staff and the student’s.

Jerry’s passions extended far beyond his professional life. He was a man who thrived in the embrace of nature. His love for life was infectious. He dedicated countless hours to volunteering with Custom Canines Service Dog Academy, training service dogs for disabled individuals and fellow veterans. His involvement with the Friends of Poynette Game Farm and the Learn to Hunt program showcased his dedication to teaching young people about responsible hunting practices. His love for hunting, fishing, training dogs, canoeing, boating, camping, and most importantly, spending time with his daughters and grandchildren, filled his life with immense joy and fulfillment.

Jerry was a proud member of numerous groups, including The Wisconsin Beagle Club, McKenzie Center, Deutsh Drahthaar Club, NAVHDA, Tri-County Wings over Wisconsin, and served as an NRA-certified range safety officer at the North Bristol Sportsman’s Club. His compassionate heart, boundless energy, an unforgettable smile have left an unforgettable mark on his family, friends, and the many lives he touched, both human and canine. Jerry’s legacy of kindness, service, and love for his community and the natural world around us will continue to inspire and guide us for years to come.

In honoring Jerry’s memory, we request that memorials be made to Custom Canines Service Dog Academy or The Friends of Poynette Game Farm – organizations that were very dear to him and embody the essence of his spirit and character. We warmly invite friends, family, and all whose lives were touched by him to join us in a visitation and celebration of his life on Friday, March 8, 2024. The visitation will be held from 9 to 11 AM, with a service to follow at 11 AM, and a luncheon thereafter at The United Methodist Church in Sun Prairie, WI. His service will conclude with a graveside ceremony, including full military honors, at 2 PM at Sun Prairie Memory Gardens.

Jerry, your spirit will forever guide us, your stories always amuse us, and your love will continue to bind us. Your legacy is not just remembered; it is lived.
