Mt. Vernon Jerry Dowden 1940-2022
Jerry Dowden, age 82, passed away at home on August 18, 2022. Part of Jerry died when his beloved wife, Jan, passed away in 2018. Jerry was born in Blair, NE and grew up in Clear Lake, Iowa. He graduated from Cornell College in Iowa, where he met his soulmate, Jan. He then proudly served in the United States Navy.
Jerry and Jan moved to Madison and were a dynamic duo in the Madison Metropolitan School District. With his supportive and understanding style, Jerry was an extraordinary Principal at Orchard Ridge, Falk, Spring Harbor and Glen Stephens Elementary Schools. Jerry was dedicated to the MMSD School Forest and the Sugar River Clean-Up Project. After retirement, Jerry followed his love for the Badgers and worked in the UW Ticket Office. Ever the educator, his compassionate and friendly work demeanor influenced the UW students he supervised.
Jerry loved the woods, the mountains of Sun Valley, Idaho and especially the UW Badgers. His passion for golf, tennis, and skiing kept him extremely active. Jerry was an inspiration and life-long friend to those fortunate to know him. His love of life brought infectious joy to those near and dear to him. Jerry will be greatly missed.
Jerry was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jan. He is survived by his nephew Scott (Amy), great-nephew Tate, great-niece Ceci of Aurora, IL and sister-in-law Susie (Rick) Cerny of Iowa City.
