Joan Mccarthy

Waunakee: Joan Frances McCarthy, age 86, passed away on Monday June 26, 2017.

Joan was born on November 5, 1930, the daughter of Joseph and Josephine Cerny. She grew up in Manitowoc Wisconsin and went on to attend college in both Milwaukee and Madison eventually earning her PhD in Educational Psychology.

Joan met and married James McCarthy while attending college in Milwaukee. The couple moved to Madison Wisconsin where James pursued his career as a Professor of Studies in Behavioral Disabilities. Joan worked in the Madison Public Schools as a School Psychologist and together they coauthored a book on learning disabilities.

Joan enjoyed sailing, travel, books and music. She was an active member of the Holy Wisdom Monastery.

Joan is survived by her three children, Peggy, Patricia, and James; five grandchildren, Emily, Sarah, Emmett, Kate and Caroline; and two great grandchildren, Elaina and Katelyn; and was preceded in death by her husband James and her brother James Cerny.
A visitation will take place from 12:00 pm until 1:00pm, Friday June 30, 2017 at Holy Wisdom Monastery, 4200 County Road M, Middleton, WI 53562. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 pm. Friends of Joan and her family are welcome. Please share a memory at www.CressFuneralService.com .
