MADISON—John Robert Bertram passed away peacefully at Agrace Hospice Care in Fitchburg, WI on June 15, 2022. John was born on January 15, 1943 to Robert and Nona (Nemacheck) Bertram, and he was the youngest of three children. John grew up in Neenah, WI, and he went on to graduate from Lawrence University in Appleton, WI.
John received his medical degree from the UW Madison School of Medicine and completed a residency in Stockton, CA. John joined the Dean Clinic in 1974, and he was the first dermatologist on staff. He went on to practice there until his retirement in 2000.
John served our country as a part of the Wisconsin Army National Guard serving with the 13th Evacuation Hospital.
Following his retirement, John and his wife, Mariann, spent their winters in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico where they enjoyed a rich social life with many friends and numerous travel experiences.
In his leisure time, John enjoyed sports, and especially excelled in tennis and golf. He was also a dedicated Wisconsin Badger fan. Later in retirement, John took up playing Duplicate Bridge and was sought after as a partner, especially in the Puerto Vallarta Bridge Club.
John had a love of animals (especially cats). He was lovingly attached to Hazel, Pippin, Zorro, and Chica.
John is survived by his wife of 35 years, Mariann; sister Marilyn (Rocky) Jersild; brothers-in-law Bob Garcia and John (Laurel) McCartan; sister-in-law Nancy McCartan; and his caring niece and friend Christine Jersild. He was loved and admired by his 7 nieces and nephews who include Susan Jersild Velikoff, Howard (Angela) Jersild, Carolyn (Jim) Tuff, Marilyn (Jim) Kott, John (Dyan) Garcia, John (Megan) McCartan, and many other great-nieces and great-nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents, sister Susan Garcia, and his first wife Mary Alice Sword.
Private services will be held.
