John Garner

McFarland- John A. Garner, age 74, passed away on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at Skaalen Nursing & Rehab. He was born in Hillsboro on July 13, 1943, the son of Robert and Myrl Garner. John was raised in Hillsboro. After high school he was drafted into the U.S. Navy. John served 6 years as a machinist mate on the aircraft carrier The Intrepid. He met Judy Broadhead in 1970 and on September 28, 1974 they were married in McFarland. Together they shared a friendship and love for over 44 years. John was a member of the VFW and American Legion Post, serving as Quartermaster for many years. He worked at CUNA Mutual Insurance for 26 years, retiring in 2006. Since retirement, John and Judy have enjoyed trips through WI and IL, especially their annual anniversary trip to Galena, IL. John collected tractors and enjoyed tractor pulls. He was an avid reader and war history buff. John is survived by his wife, Judy; sisters, Marceline Hooker and Karen Garner, both of Kendall; brother, Robert (Jing) Garner of Reedsburg; brother-in-law, Jim (Pat) Broadhead of Fairview, TN; sister-in-law, Gail (Lionel) Kliss of Three Lakes; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; step mother, Bernetta Garner; and brother-in-law, Oscar Hooker. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 4, 2018 at Cress Funeral Home in McFarland. Burial will take place at Town of Dunn Burying Grounds. Friends and relatives are invited to the McFarland American Legion, following the burial, for a luncheon reception. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of services Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the VFW, or charity of the donor's choice.
