Mount Horeb: John Ivens, age 87, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at All Saints Assisted Living in Madison. He was born March 30, 1929 near Fairbank, Iowa, the son of Hendrik and Johanna (Snuiverink) Ivens. John attended a one room schoolhouse near Fairbank, until he went to high school. He was employed at Rath Packing in Waterloo, IA for 23 years. John married Dorothy Daly Penne December 21, 1968 in Madison. John owned and operated the Baskin Robbins in Madison on Midvale Blvd. for 20 years, to the enjoyment of countless ice cream lovers. After he closed the store, he worked at Medical Benefit Administrators until his retirement. John enjoyed retirement tending to his flower garden, visiting with his friends at Harbor Athletic Club, and enjoying time with his faithful companion, Foxy. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and sons, Steve (Davina), Rob (Tiffin), John Paul (Annalynn), Matthew (Breanne), and 9 grandchildren. Following John's wishes there will be no funeral services. The family wishes to thank the staff of All Saints Assisted Living for their loving and compassionate care of John the past 9 months. The care takers there have become close friends with John, and they have made a difference in his life. Please share your memories of John.
