John Mason

Madison – John O. Mason, age 86, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 8, 2021 in Madison, WI. He was born in Indianapolis, IN on November 30, 1934, the son of George and Estelle (Sadlier) Mason. He is survived by his daughter Monica (Larry) Thuet of Glenview, IL. Beloved “Poppie” to granddaughters Allison, Margot & Lauren Thuet. He is further survived by several nieces and nephews in Illinois and Florida. Preceded in death by his parents and brother George S. Mason of Kissimmee, FL.

John grew up in Evanston, IL and attended St. Athanasius Grade School and Parish, followed by St. George High School. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1956. After graduation he was an officer in the US army based in Tacoma, Washington, where he met his future wife, Patricia McFann, where she was an elementary school teacher. They married at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Glenview, Illinois on August 5th, 1961. In his early career he was a salesman for Mead Papers in Chicago, IL. In 1972 he moved with his wife and daughter to Madison, WI and purchased a printing business with longtime friends.  Over the years this business grew into Wisconsin Office Interiors where John was one of the co-founders for over 30 years.

John was a longtime member of Nakoma Golf Club where he and his wife Pat spent many happy years playing golf and making lifelong friends. They loved to travel with family and friends, and in later years enjoyed spending several weeks in the winter in North Palm Beach, Florida where they were able to work on their golf games. John was a history buff, sports trivia master, and a true gentleman. He took great care of his family and everyone who knew him appreciated his quiet sense of humor and grace.

His family would like to genuinely thank his incredibly dedicated and compassionate team of caregivers that made his last few years comfortable and to his exact liking in his own home, as well as more recently, the attentive and caring staff from Agrace Hospice.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, April 19, 2021 at OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE, CATHOLIC CHURCH, 401 S Owen Drive, Madison, at 11am. Friends may greet the family from 10am until time of service. For those who are unable to attend in person, the services will be live streamed at the link provided here starting at 3pm on April 19.
