John Scott McKy passed away at his home on April 8, 2022. Scott was born in Madison, WI on May 24, 1959, the son of Gale and Carol McKy. He was a 1977 graduate of Madison West High School and a 1982 graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Madison. By all accounts, Scott was a gifted athlete who excelled at baseball, basketball and golf, although few would argue that he found his true passions in the late 70’s with the rise of both competitive bodybuilding and powerlifting. Scott loved these sports and the discipline they required. He competed and won the title of Mr Midwest in the same year he also had a record squat of 667 lbs. Scott competed throughout the late 70’s and 80’s, and these were easily his glory years. During this time, Scott became a cherished friend and mentor to many young men who wanted to pursue these sports.
Unfortunately, Scott also suffered from untreated anxiety, depression and PTSD. Over the last decade his untreated mental illness and other personal demons lead him to an opioid addiction. As his family, we were happy that for the past year he was finally in a treatment program and that he was making tremendous progress. While we’ll never know what changed, we pray he is finally at peace and no longer suffering. We will miss you, Scott. You were a kind and gentle person with a smile that could light up any room.
Scott is survived by his mother, Carol; his son, Josh (Tiffany) Turner; his granddaughter, Tahlia Turner; brothers Rick (Julie), and Bryan (Sandra); foster sister, Peggy (Larry) Goodger; nephews Trevor, Ethan, Clark, and Andy (Tasha); his uncle, Jim (Sheila) Schommer and many cousins and close friends. Scott was preceded in death by his father, Gale, and sister, Cheryl.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, May 5, 2022 , from 2-4 pm at Cress Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison, with a Memorial service starting at 4 pm.
